Your New Veggie Garden Location
Spring is almost here and it isn’t too late to start that vegetable garden you have always wanted. Here are some tips to help you out when planning where to put the garden in your yard.
- Choose an open, sunny location- You need sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours.
- Do a soil test- Check pH; tests can be purchased at your local discount hardware store.
- Check your soil drainage- Dig a hole, 1 ft deep and see how long it takes for the hole to empty. If more than 8 hours to percolate (drain) choose another site or consider a raised bed.
- Stay away from trees- Shade isn’t the only concern. Tree’s root system can rob the veggies from nutrients and do long term damage to the tree.
- Protect against wind- It can cause excessive evaporation and can knock down young plants.
- Plant your garden close to the house- Besides enjoying the view, you will find weeding, watering etc more convenient and it will beckon you to step outside.
- Don’t forget to deep water and mulch- When installing a garden this time of year heat stress can kill the tender plant. Check the soil for moisture and use a good mulch to hold in the moisture
- Be aware of micro climates- Areas that have micro climates; colder or warmer than surrounding air temperature
Come this summer you will be enjoying your bountiful harvest.
Happy Gardening!
