In my house it’s know as broccoli trees because it was a way to ’sell’ it to my son and get him to eat it when he was small. I guess it worked he’s a big guy now and it’s his favorite– mine too. Try it at your house– the kids love anything that can grow themselves.

Sweet peas in the garden remind me of colorful butterflies!

Known in England, as the queen of annuals, sweet peas can melt the heart of most any gardener. Their fragrance is a sweet mix of honey and orange blossom—the scent can fill the room – their ruffled flowers look like colorful butterflies. The blooms resembling tissue paper vary in shades of red, blue lavender, burgundy, pink and white.

They are a must in any garden – large or small. They make a great cut flower and are fun to fill a room or as an offering to the neighbor. Although most like to climb, there are a few that come in bush form. However, even in a pot with a trellis, the delightful plant can be squeezed into most small gardens.

Now is the time to start thinking of purchasing seeds for planting in fall. They are easy to start directly into the ground. Just plant in rich loamy soil and be sure to keep moist… I always purchase now but wait (or forget until the last minute!) and plant in the cooler season. I still have spectacular results. But my brother, Sonny, always out does me with some kind of new variety! Check out Renee’s Garden Seeds.. and see if can out do- (like Sonny does!)- someone you love! ( just be sure to share the blooms!)

Happy Fall Gardening!

A great to spend some cozy time is on the patio this summer. You can’t beat a pot full of Ivy geraniums. I love the long bloom time and great color combinations. Add some to your patio and enjoy a glass of lemonade!

Now is the time to pull out your garden catalogs or visit the local nursery to see all the bulbs that are available for spring planting. I shop early for good selection and refrigerate the bulbs for at least 6 weeks to simulate a cold winter. When planting, use a bone mill to provide calcium for the bulbs to grow and bring you a cheery spring bouquet!
